Chicago Fire: Why & How Yuri Sardarov’s Otis Died

For seven seasons, Yuri Sardarov played fan-favorite firefighter Brian “Otis” Zvonecek on the television series Chicago Fire, but in the Season 8 premiere episode, “Sacred Ground,” Otis dies from injuries he sustained while fighting a fire at a mattress factory.

Chicago Fire, created by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas, premiered in 2012 on NBC and spawned the Chicago franchise, with spinoffs Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med. The series follows the lives of the firefighters at the fictional Firehouse 51. Sardarov’s Otis was one of the original first responders who was often a source of comedic relief in the series. His death shook up the show and reminded viewers that despite many of the main cast continually emerging alive in resolutions to previous cliffhangers, the perils facing the firefighters were deadly.
