ER: Why George Clooney’s Doug Ross Left the Series

For five seasons, George Clooney played heartthrob and pediatric surgeon Dr. Doug Ross on ER. His role as the charming, womanizing bad-boy was met with almost overnight success, with the show becoming television’s most-watched drama and cementing the actor, who was relatively unknown at the time, as a household name. Ross’s occasionally explosive exploits at the County General Hospital in Chicago and his will-they-won’t they relationship with Nurse Carol Hathaway (Julianna Margulies) were highlights in early seasons, and Ross became one of the breakout characters of the show.
